Adviser Agreement

You’ve been given a copy of my basic expectations for you. Likewise, it is important for you to know what to expect from me. I have asked you to commit to and prioritize the publication staff and I offer that same commitment and prioritization back to you.

As an adviser:

I WILL:

  • Speak honestly with you, treat you with respect, and encourage student-ownership of the work we produce.
  • Expose you to new ideas, trends and exemplary work from other scholastic media outlets.
  • Hold you to high standards of integrity and accuracy.
  • Actively encourage student expression, experimentation and creativity.
  • Teach basic and advanced skills for yearbook, broadcast and digital media.
  • Allow for and support editorial board decision-making.
  • Communicate with fundraising vendors, district accounting, and other paperwork-heavy offices on behalf of the student staff members.
  • Announce and post expectations and deadlines, clarifying as needed, to enable student success.
  • Help train and refresh staff members as necessary throughout the year.
  • Provide a time, place and supervision for work nights before a deadline if needed.
  • Grade work consistently and fairly.
  • Ask you a lot of questions and listen to your responses.
  • Admit when I don’t actually know something.
  • Assist and guide decision-making and staff meetings as necessary.
  • Check out cameras if an authorized student is not available to do so.
  • Sing your praises to anyone I can, anytime I can.
  • Have access to all accounts for digital platforms.
  • Help editors in motivating, encouraging, and celebrating staff.
  • Help editors in having difficult conversations with staff.
  • Help staff who are struggling to communicate with editors.
  • Expect staff members to help themselves first.
  • Challenge you. A lot.

I WILL NOT:

  • Do your interviews or your research for you.
  • Forward emails that your contacts should have sent to you (but they didn’t because it’s easier to tell them to email me.)
  • Edit lazy writing to meet a deadline.
  • Finish incomplete work.
  • Design your spreads or pages.
  • Upload, rate, or edit your photos.
  • Write you a pass when you’re late to someone’s class.
  • Give up my lunch – this is the one time of day I keep to myself. Please respect that.
  • Respond to Slack messages outside of appropriate hours.

As the teacher and adviser, I will work with each of you to help you understand the requirements of your assignments and provide you with the tools and information necessary for you to be successful in your work. Due to the diverse nature of assignments students are working on at any given time, I expect staff members to make use of the tools and resources I provide but I will enthusiastically help with any student who needs clarification or further guidance.
